NHPGA Endowment Fund

Endowment Bylaws

1) The purpose of the New Hampshire Horticulture Endowment (NHHE) is to raise money through donations or other fund raising activities for the purpose of research and education in ornamental horticulture.

2) The NHHE will always be a branch of the New Hampshire Plant Growers Association (NHPGA).

3) The NHHE will maintain a permanent designated fund managed by the New Hampshire Charitable Trust or any similar charitable foundation under the same IRS tax code.

4) The NHHE will grant money on a yearly basis based on the investment income earned, minus maintenance cost at the New Hampshire Charitable Trust.  The investment income does not have to be used in its entirety each year.  Unused income must be rolled back into principle.

5) Grants will be given to Universities, Colleges, and research institutions for horticultural research and education.  Research must primarily benefit New Hampshire horticulture. Secondarily it must benefit horticulture at large.

6) A board of directors of at least 5 people will be maintained, including at least 1 person from the NHPGA board of directors. Ideally an odd number will serve on the board.  If this proves impossible and a deadlock occurs on a vote, the president of the board of directors of the New Hampshire Plant Growers Association will cast the deciding vote.

7) Members of the NHHE Board of Directors are nominated for three year terms by current members of the Board, with final approval by the NHPGA Board of Directors.  A staggered calendar for Board members’ terms will be maintained by the NHHE Administrative Assistant.

8) An annual report will be published by the NHHE. Included in this is a list of all donors, past and present.  Also included in the annual report will be general news from the endowment, a financial report  and a write-up from any research funded by the NHHE.  The annual report will also be made available to the NHPGA newsletter, The Plantsman, for their use.

9) All new donors will be recognized in the NHPGA newsletter, The Plantsman.

10) Donations are to be categorized in the following way:
Pacesetting - $10,000 plus
Leading - $5,000 to $9,999
Major - $3,000 to $4,999
Primary - $1,000 to $2,999
Supporting - $500 to $999
Special - $300 to $499
Donors - $300 or less
All donations are cumulative in respect to categories. Founding Benefactors (those who contributed in the first year of fundraising) will be recognized with a * when their name is listed, and a footnote stating that they are founding benefactors.

11) Any publications based on research funded in part of fully by the New Hampshire Horticulture Endowment must give written credit to the NHHE.

 12) In case of disbanding of the New Hampshire Plant Growers Association, or the decision of the NHPG to dissolve the New Hampshire Horticulture Endowment,  the principle of the endowment must be donated to other horticultural trusts or endowments with similar goals as the NHHE.

13) These bylaws can only be changed by recommendation of the New Hampshire Horticulture Endowment Board of Directors with approval by the NH Plant Growers Board of Directors.

14) The NH Horticultural Endowment Board will not provide grants in any year in which net assets drop below $100,000 without approval from the NHPGA Board of Directors. (Approved 1/17/07)
